On August 18, 2007, Wessaweskeag Historical Society, located in South
Thomaston, hosted the 140th Kalloch Family Association meeting with 38
people in attendance. The Wessaweskeag Historical Society building in
South Thomaston is a red former school house and has an excellent meeting
room. It is located next door to the Zimmerman home, which is an old
Kalloch homestead.
Guest
speaker was Dianne Bergstedt Boyd who presented an introduction to the Maine
Boyds and their Kalloch connection. Dianne’s husband Richard Boyd,
descends from George Boyd who came from Antrim and married Margaret Finley
Kalloch (daughter of our common ancestor Finley, who was born in N. Ireland
in 1718 and moved to Warren, ME in 1735). Dianne's

The Kalloch/Boyd connection dates back to the Ulster Scots. Dianne
stressed that not only do we share a historical connection, but a cultural
one as well. Her concluding statements reflect our heritage. “We
(the Kallochs) have fought the enemy, and each other, to maintain our
freedom. We’ve learned to defend ourselves, our family and our land.”
Well said.
For the last four years Richard and Dianne were active with the
Saint
Andrews Society of Maine, and were the Games Chairs for the last couple of
year, as well as the Northeast Director for Clan Boyd International.
More recently they have been involved in the
Maine Ulster Scots Project, and
last Summer completed an international symposium with speakers from Ulster
regarding the Ulster-Scots immigration into Maine and New England prior to
the American Revolution. They also make presentations to schools and
historical societies, and have been invited to take their presentations to
Fort Ticonderoga this year and Ulster next year.
More recently, the National Scottish Coalition asked Diane and Richard to be the Coordinators for
Maine Tartan Day. This was held on April 6, 2007, and
included a parade of clans and pipe bands leading up to the steps of the
Maine capitol building, a reading of the National Tartan Day Proclamation,
and a presentation to the Governor by John Mann. John formally
presented the Governor with a copy of his book "Maine Ulster Scots on the
Coast of Maine."

The Annual Gilchrest-Robinson family reunion was held at
the St. George grange hall on Sunday, August 19, 2007. The next
family reunion will be held at the St. George grange hall on the third
Sunday in August in 2008 (the day after the Kalloch Reunion).
Bring food and come if you can. If you can't bring food simply
come and socialize with your relatives. Get a copy of your family
tree. No program is planned.
Many of us Kalloch's from the St. George, Maine area are related to the Gilchrest's and Robinson's. Finley's
son Matthew married Moses Robinson's daughter, Margaret, so all Kalloch's from this branch are also Robinsons.
There are also many other connections between our families.

Their next reunion will be held on June 8th to 10th, 2007 in Jacksonville, Texas. The
reunion is held near the site where a number of Killough family members were
massacred in 1838 by a party of Mexicans
and Indians.
The old cemetery out in the forest near Jacksonville, TX, is being watched over by Jean Cannon of Tyler, TX.
She hires people and secures volunteers to have it cleaned up and repairs made periodically. The funds for
this and other necessary ongoing expenses (web site, mailings, etc.) of our organization come from contributions
sent in by families or individuals who are interested in preserving our family history as well as families who
have come to the reunion. Your $10 each year is greatly needed and appreciated even in the years we don't
meet. Please send your contribution to Jean Cannon, Treas., 806 Neches, Tyler, TX 75702.
Greetings to our Killough Relatives!!!
