Joyce, Roy E., 64, station director, American red Cross at Fort George G. Meade, Md., died unexpectedly Feb. 2 [1984] at Walter Reed Army Hospital.  A native of Rockland, he had served the Red Cross and U.S. Armed Services for 34 years and was due to retire the end of March.  During World War II he served as engineer and crew chief in the B-17 "Flying Fortress" stationed with the 8th Army Air Force in Thetford (Bury-St. Edmunds) England.  He flew 19 missions over Nazi Germany before his plane exploded over Holland after a raid over the heart of Berlin.  He was taken prisoner and held captive in various "Stalag Lufts."  He credited his survival and that of his fellow POWs to the Red Cross food parcels of many nations which they received intermittently, and vowed he would thank them by service in some capacity when freed.  After a long forced winter march to Mossburg, Bavaria, during which they subsisted on what they could forage in the hostile countryside, he was liberated by General George Patton's forces in May 1945.  Among other decorations, he received the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.  Upon discharge from the Army Air Force, he entered the University of Maine, majoring in sociology and psychology to prepare for social service work.  After graduation in June 1950, he was hired immediately by the American Red Cross as a uniformed assistance field director in their service to the Armed Forces.  He was sent to Korea during that conflict.  Joyce was promoted to field director (title now designated station director) in 1954 at Otis Air Force Base, Falmouth, Mass. and has since served in that capacity with Air Force, Army and Navy Air Force on many installations in the eastern area of the United States.  He served in Vietnam, twice in Korea, five years in France at Chinon and Poiters and twice in Germany (Bad Kreuznach and recently Mannheim from which he returned in January 1982) for a total of 14 years of foreign duty and a total of 34 years in American Red Cross SAF.  He married Katherine Rice, daughter of the late Capt. Keryn ap Rice and Josephine Honas Rice of Washington, D.C. in 1945 following a remarkable proposal broadcast from Nazi Germany and conducted by the infamous "Axis Sally," Mildred Gillars, who regularly interviewed American POWs recording their remarks without their knowledge.  He leaves two sons, Keryn ap and Mark Elliott Joyce, and his mother, Lillian Gay Joyce of Rockland, who recently made her home with him.  The funeral will be conducted from the Post Chapel, Fort George G. Meade, Md.  He will be buried in Rockland.  Friends are asked in lieu of flowers to make a donation in his memory to the American Red Cross.  Funeral arrangements are with the Carpenter Funeral Home, Broadway, Rockland.
