Raised in a small northwestern Wisconsin town in the heart of the lumbering industry, Ethel had an older brother and 2 younger sisters. Getting a certificate, she taught in a one-room school. Then entered the business world, becoming assistant manager of an electrical appliance & contracting firm in Green Bay, Wis. She married Henry Brandenburg in 1920, and moved with him to Appleton, Wisconsin. They had a daughter Mary. In the mid-30's she returned to the business world and soon earned a reputation as an astute business woman. She retired in 1958. During World War II, she served as president of the Service Women's Mothers Organization. She died in December 1960. (Written by Ethel's daughter, Mary Tollefson).
