He joined the Illinois Infantry in 1862 at the age of 18; was taken prisoner of war at Union City, TN, and confined at Richmond, VA, beginning December 18, 1862. Apparently he escaped; Union prisoner of war records indicate that he was absent without
leave beginning January 18, 1863. After his first two-year term he re-enlisted for a three-year term starting March 30, 1864. He listed his occupation as farmer.
