He is the ancestor of the Livingston Co., KY., Division of the Old South Branch of the family. In his early years, he moved to Mecklenburg, North Carolina, with his brother Isaac. He lived in Oglethorpe County, GA, from 1789 to 1793, then moved
through Tennessee to Livingston County, KY. He had only two known sons, Allen and James, but big families made numerous descendants. The information on Allen and James makes up this part of the Old South Branch of the family beginning in Livingston
Co., KY. Most of John's descendants eventually settled in Ala., Miss., Ark. and Tex. rather than Kentucky. He remained there a few years after his brother Isaac left for South Carolina. On April 27, 1774, John bought a farm between McCalpin and
McMichael Creeks in Mecklenburg Co., N. C. Thereafter he erected a tavern by the main road. He was held in esteem by his neighbors and elected constable of Mecklenburg County, NC. A Mary Killough, b. 1764, d. 1768, may have been a daughter of theirs.
