Notes for Albert F. Elwell

1. Sea Captain. Fisherman. Unknown parents. Raised by grandparents, who are also listed as parents in most of the documents. / 2. "Albert Elwell was adopted at birth in 1858 in South Thomaston/Spruce Head and raised by Israel Elwell and Sarah Kalloch Shea, a widowed couple in their 50's on their 2nd marriage. Both came into the marriage with multiple teenage boys & girls. One of the daughters (or a daughter-in-law), is Albert's mother, who gave her baby to Israel and Sarah to raise. Albert's adoption is on his death certificate, and also indicated by his wife Mary Tower to Burpee-Carpenter Funeral Home (Rockland, ME) at his death. The death certificate also states Albert was a lobster smackman, not a sea captain.
Oral history from his daughter, Grace Elwell York, says "the couple wasn't allowed to marry and the baby's father, a Kalloch, was shipped off to sea and drowned." Even so, Albert's name is on the gravestone of one of Israel's sons, David Elwell and his wife Nancy Kiff Elwell, as their son (Forest Hill Cemetery, So. Thomaston, ME), but they never raised him. One of Sarah's daughters, Ellen, stayed in the household throughout his growing up years, briefly married and later divorced William, also one of Israel's sons, soon after Albert's birth. It could be surmised that Wm and Ellen were Albert's parents, but there is no proof, nor did William play any role in raising Albert; and at this time, it does not support oral family history that Albert's father was a Kalloch. Albert is also on several Ancestry trees as the son of Nancy Kiff Elwell and her 2nd husband, Seth Stockbridge.
There are yet many leads and many conflicting unanswered questions, but what is known is that Albert was adopted by the only parents he ever knew, and who gave the latter part of their lives to raising him, Israel and Sarah Kalloch Shea Elwell," (From Life Sketch on FamilySearch, Albert F. Elwell
